It’s winter but it’s not too early to start thinking about back to school with Chehalis Barber & Company. Now through August, the barbers are collecting new shoes for kids in need in preparation for back-to-school season.

“The first day of school is kind of a big deal for most kids and it sets them up for the whole year,” says Chehalis Barber & Company owner Annalee Adams. “So, we are asking the community to help.” All sizes of new shoes are needed and can be dropped off at Chehalis Barber & Company.

That’s not all Chehalis Barber & Company’s doing to help kids for back to school. With the start of 2020, the barbershop will be collecting donations for kid’s haircuts. To pre-pay for a student’s back-to-school haircut is just $10. Donations are accepted until the end of August and there is a drop box at the barbershop for donations of any amount. For the week leading up to back to school, parents can bring in their kids from kindergarten to 12th grade for a fresh new style just in time for the start of the school year.

The free haircuts were a hit last year with a line wrapping around the building at the opening. Customers and locals paid it forward by pre-paying for the kid’s haircuts. “It was really fun,” says Annalee. “Most of the kids had never been to a barber before so it was a great experience. We want to make it a yearly thing so it’s one thing no parent needs to worry about.”

This year, Annalee and the barbers plan to raise enough for 500 haircuts. “The money will pay for snacks and drinks and tip the employees because I don’t expect anyone to tip them during the free haircuts,” says Annalee. Co-owner Javiela Joblonski and Annalee also give their time at Winlock Assembly of God’s back to school night, which is where the shoe donations will be distributed.

With the help of the community, they hope to do more in 2020 to prepare local students for a fantastic back-to-school experience.
