Centralia senior Kary Sathre, a member of the Tigers’ volleyball team, and Mossyrock senior Bo Miles, a four-year starter for the Vikings’ football squad, have been selected as the Community First Auto Group Athletes of the Month for October.
Kary Sathre, Centralia High School

A year after earning first-team All-EvCo honors as a junior, Sathre, a three-year letter winner and captain, has upped her game during her senior season, helping the Tigers secure their tenth consecutive playoff appearance.
“Kary has been an important part of Tiger volleyball for several years now. One of the keys for her is how hard she works on and off the court to get better,” said Centralia coach Neil Sharp. “She is a difference maker offensively and defensively for us. She is one of the best attackers in the area and is also a really good blocker, digger, and server. Kary is a great role model for our younger players on and off the court. She has taken on a bigger leadership role this year and has done a great job leading by example, as well as vocally.”
The 5-foot-9 right-side hitter, leads the team in kills (2.5 per set) for a third consecutive year and is the team leader in aces (serving over 88 percent). She is on pace to finish third all-time in career kills for the Tigers.
“Kary plays even taller than she is actually is,” Sharp said. “She works so hard in the weight room and with her physical fitness, she out-jumps most of her opponents.”
Centralia opened October by losing to Black Hills in five sets (25-22, 15-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-11) before stringing together three consecutive victories. With Sathre leading the charge, the Tigers swept both Aberdeen and Rochester and edged rival W.F. West in five sets.
“We definitely had our struggles in the beginning of the season, but I think we’ve fixed that and have improved as a team every time we’ve played,” Sathre said. “We just need to continue to be us, play hard and continue to focus on playing together as a team.”
A member of the 2A Academic state championship team in 2015, Sathre plans to enter the vet tech program at Pierce College.
Bo Miles, Mossyrock High School

A starter since his freshman year, Miles has been the Vikings’ go-to player during his senior year.
After opening the season with three consecutive losses, Mossyrock made a significant change on offense, moving Miles from quarterback to running back. The Vikings responded by winning three out of their next four games with the offense averaging 36.3 points in their three victories.
“The goal is to make it to state. It’s been everyone’s goal since we started playing together in pee-wee football,” Miles said. “Our win/loss record hasn’t always been what we wanted it to be over the last four years, but I’ve had such great experiences playing with my teammates who are my family. We’re just focused on making the playoffs and seeing what we can do.”
Over the last four games, Miles has ran for 449 yards and five touchdowns on 70 carries, averaging 6.4 yards per carry. He has also caught eight passes for 134 yards and a score and registered 36 tackles on defense.
“Bo is a coach’s dream. He earns solid grades in the classroom, performs as a field general during games, leads by example, prepares as well as anybody I have ever coached, and plays through pain,” said Mossyrock coach Jason Cole. “He is incredibly multi-talented and can play all over the field on both sides of the ball. Bo has had to carry the load for us lately and always rises to the occasion. He is the first player to come over and shake my hand after a game, and he knows he has the coaching staff’s trust and confidence to make the right decisions.”
Miles, who has a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, is looking at playing football next year at either Pacific Lutheran University or Lewis and Clark College.
Community First Auto Group will be selecting an athlete of the month during the school year with all recipients being entered into a pool for a scholarship opportunity. The Athlete of the Year will be chosen at the end of the year with one male and one female student athlete receiving $500.
